If today was my week 1 as a freelance copywriter, here’s what I’d do: 1) I would do some market/competitor research to find inspiration and tips for how to do it myself. 2) Write out my goals and find my why. 3) Start educating myself on copywriting and draft some samples for my portfolio. 4) Start sourcing companies and businesses I would like to help. And create a spreadsheet to track these as I start pitching. 5) Set up the basics of my freelancing business and save the rest for when it’s relevant or when I’ve got some extra time. And that’s it. At the end of last year, I decided to take the plunge and go fully freelance to become a writer (screams into the nearest pillow). For me, this meant giving up any contract work and only focusing on landing new clients and projects with the hope of building strong relationships and trust over time – and ultimately doing what I love, writing. Nine months down the line and there’s one question that is always on my mind, how do I land more clients? I have mostly focused on a cold emailing strategy, offering up my services to agencies. This has worked, and I have landed some lovely clients by doing so, but it's an incredibly time-consuming process and I'm interested in discovering what other methods are out there and actually work. So I asked 6 people how they landed their first freelance project, and this is what they had to say: Saba Kozinska, Copywriter and Music Blogger: "In my case, it was a friend who took a chance on me and commissioned my first copywriting projects. Thanks to that cooperation, I was finally able to start showing a portfolio of published texts, which I’ll always be super grateful for."
